The drawing- ‘The Abdicating King’ appropriates a poignant reportage photograph of Edward VIII in 1936. He is captured moving from an Interior space to an exterior, and in turn stepping down from his privileged bloodline position of King to a status somewhere nearer to the common man.
Utilising the democracy of a piece of graph paper, ‘The Abdicating King’ is realised in Brooks’ specific pinhole/ needle drawing technique, thus, encouraging the puncturing of space to evoke a sense of loss and change within a larger social structure. This forms part of an ongoing investigation concerning the relationship of the individual to society.
